Glacier Express

Days 1-2 - London to Switzerland
We depart London Waterloo at about 0900 by Eurostar for Paris with a meal served on board. After crossing the city by coach, we travel by TGV to Dijon for an overnight stay at the Mercure Dijon Clémenceau (4 star). Our journey continues the following morning into Switzerland to the foot of the Simplon Pass and the small, historic town of Brig, where we spend the next four nights.

Days 3-5 - Brig
On our first full day in Brig we take the narrow-gauge mountain railway to Zermatt, a picturesque resort overlooked by the Matterhorn. You are free to explore the town, take a walk into the mountains or, if you have a head for heights, make the exciting journey up to Gornergrat, situated at over 10,000 ft. We visit the charming town of Interlaken on Day 4 and your options here are endless. Enjoy a lake cruise, take a mountain railway ride through the Alpine meadows or undertake the fabulous journey to the highest railway station in Europe, Jungfraujoch at over 11,000ft. Your final day in Brig is free to explore this beautiful region at your leisure using your Swiss Pass.

Day 6 - The Glacier Express
We leave Brig on the famous Glacier Express narrow-gauge train, probably the slowest 'express' in the world. The train climbs up the Rhône Valley to Andermatt and then snakes and spirals its way towards the Oberalp Pass, the highest point of the route at 6,670ft. The train descends through autumnal woodland to the Rhine and continues along the valley to Chur, arriving early afternoon. Lunch on board is included. We spend three nights in Chur, a historic town in southeast Switzerland.

Days 7-8 - Over the Bernina Pass
On Day 7 we join the narrow-gauge Rhaetian Railway for the spectacular journey to Poschiavo, a delightful town in the Italian-speaking region. We travel past waterfalls and deep ravines to the Albula Pass and then our ascent loops into the Engadine Valley before climbing even higher over the Bernina Pass to more than 7,000ft. After time in Poschiavo we return to Chur via St Moritz. Your final day in Chur is free to explore the medieval cobbled alleyways and pretty squares of the Old Town. Alternatively, make the spectacular train journey to the scenic mountain resort of Arosa, or visit the handsome lakeside city of Luzern and enjoy a relaxing steamer cruise on the lake.

Days 9-10 - Our journey home
We leave Chur and travel by EuroCity train into Germany for the spectacular journey past the vineyards and fairytale castles of the Rhine Gorge to Cologne. Our hotel for one night is the Hotel Euro Garden (4 star), located within walking distance of the station, Rhine and the city's magnificent Gothic cathedral. We depart the following morning for Brussels and connect with Eurostar to London, where we arrive late afternoon.
