By train to the Arctic Circle and fjords of Western Norway
Discover fantastic city sights and scenic delights on this 20-day grand tour of Scandinavia by train along some of Europe's most remote routes.
Day 1 - By train to Germany
We depart at about 1240 from London Waterloo to Brussels by Eurostar with a meal served on board. Thalys then takes us to Cologne for one night at the Four Points Hotel Central (4 star).
Day 2 - Across Germany and into Denmark
We leave Cologne by InterCity train via Hamburg and make a train ferry ride across the border to Copenhagen, where our hotel for two nights is the Grand Hotel (4 star).
Day 3 - Sightseeing in Copenhagen
Our morning sightseeing tour includes the magnificent Amalienborg Palace, the Little Mermaid and a cruise around the canals and waterways of the city. The afternoon is free for you to explore Copenhagen, not forgetting to visit the enchanting Tivoli Gardens.
Day 4 - By train to Sweden
We leave Copenhagen by train for the scenic journey via Malmo to Stockholm where our base for two nights is the Radisson SAS Royal Viking Hotel (4 star).
Day 5 - The delights of Stockholm
Our morning sightseeing tour includes the Royal Palace, Cathedral and the narrow streets of the Old Town. Your afternoon is free to explore or perhaps visit the Wasa, the royal flagship recovered from the seabed in 1961 after sinking in Stockholm harbour on her maiden voyage in 1628.
Day 6 - North by sleeper train
After a free day, we join the early evening sleeper to Kiruna for a journey through northern Sweden in almost perpetual daylight. A cold supper is included.
Day 7 - Kiruna and Jukkasjarvi
We cross the Arctic Circle and arrive in Kiruna mid-morning. From here we visit the largest iron ore mine in the world and the village of Jukkasjarvi. Mid-afternoon we continue on the Ofoten Railway to the sea port of Narvik in Norway for a two-night stay at the Radisson SAS Grand Royal Hotel (3 star), situated close to the town's museums and monuments.
Day 8 - Free in Narvik
Your day in Narvik is free, giving you the opportunity to visit the wartime Resistance Museum or take a cable-car ride (seasonal) for breathtaking views along the rugged coast.
Day 9 - South to Trondheim
Today is a long day which begins with a coach journey along the coast and a beautiful ferry crossing. At Fauske we continue by train, crossing the Arctic Circle again before arriving in Trondheim, Norway's religious capital, late evening. Here we stay two nights at the Britannia Hotel (4 star), in the centre of this historic town.
Day 10 - Historic Trondheim
Our morning sightseeing tour includes the fascinating Music Museum at Ringve and ends outside the Nidaros Cathedral.
Day 11 - Into fjord country
We depart Trondheim by coach and travel south through some of Norway's most majestic fjord scenery. Our journey takes us along the Trollstig Road (weather permitting), high over the mountain pass where snow lingers well into the summer. We arrive in Geiranger for a two-night stay at the Union Hotel (4 star), situated at the head of the fjord.
Day 12 - Cruising the Geiranger Fjord
The Geiranger Fjord is Norway's most spectacular, with near vertical sides and roaring waterfalls, and today we enjoy the unforgettable scenery during a morning boat cruise.
Day 13 - The best of the fjords
We leave Geiranger by coach and continue through fjord country to Flåm, terminus of the famed Flåm Railway at the head of the Sognefjord. We stay two nights at the Fretheim Hotel (3 star).
Day 14 - The thrilling Flåm Railway
Departing from the fjord side, we take the Flåm Railway on one of Europe's most dramatic railway lines, which winds up through the mountains to the main line at Myrdal. Your afternoon is free.
Day 15 - Over the mountains to Bergen
From Flåm we travel by coach to Undredal, a peaceful village on the side of the fjord, which boasts one of the smallest stave churches in Norway. We then continue over mountains to Bergen for a two-night stay at the Radisson SAS Royal Hotel (4 star).
Day 16 - Bergen
Bergen is a lively, cultural city surrounded by forested mountains, islands and deep fjords. Today you are free to enjoy Bergen. The options are many; make a trip on the funicular, the cable car or perhaps take a stroll along Bryggen, the historic wharf area lined with colourful wooden merchants' houses, now home to an excellent selection of shops, restaurants and museums.
Day 17 - The Bergen-Oslo Railway
We leave Bergen for a magnificent journey on the Bergen Railway across some of the most remote areas of western Norway to Oslo. We spend the night at the Radisson SAS Hotel Plaza (4 star).
Day 18 - Cruise to Germany
After a free morning in Oslo, we join the Color Line overnight sailing to Kiel in Germany. Accommodation is in comfortable two-berth cabins with shower and WC, dinner and breakfast are included.
Day 19 - To Cologne
On arrival in Kiel, we continue by InterCity train to Cologne, for another overnight stay at the Four Points Hotel Central.
Day 20 Sunday - To Brussels for Eurostar
We leave for Brussels, connecting with Eurostar to London. A meal is served on board before our arrival late-afternoon.
